Tangier
Located on Morocco’s Mediterranean coast, Tangier has been a gateway between Africa and Europe since the Phoenicians established a port in the 8th century. Situated on the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is approximately 9 miles (14 km) from the southern tip of Spain. You will hear not only Darija being spoken, among others, but will also hear Spanish spoken by many residents and tourists. It is one of Morocco’s oldest cities, and it has had one of the most intriguing histories. Adventure awaits when you go to Tangier! It is a multi-cultural city, and its diverse nationalities, languages, and religions make it a place where there is never a dull moment.
Situated between the sea and the rolling hills, the “White City,” as it is known for its abundance of white buildings, Tangier is also known for creating the original Moroccan mint tea, or atay, as we call it.
While in Tangier, surely you will want to sit in a café and enjoy a glass…or two while you watch the hustle and bustle of the busy streets as Tangerines (residents of Tangier) go about their daily activities.
Long known as a haven for artists and writers such as American writer Paul Bowles, and French artist Henri Matisse, Tangier continues to stir creativity among people, and would perhaps be the perfect setting for your next novel or painting. Consider the possibilities!
