Essaouira

Essaouira! The name alone, which means “well designed” makes me smile thinking of the “Wind City of Africa.” A beautiful, artsy, coastal town, with a bustling port, Essaouira was originally inhabited by the Phoenicians until Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah installed himself so that his people could launch attacks on Agadir. Previously named Mogodor in the 18th century, Essaouira is now a picturesque fishing village and beach town that attracts tourists year-round.

A haven for artists, surfers, and writers, among others, Essaouira has become a “go to” location for beach-lovers who flock to the beaches during the summer months. It is also home to the famous Gnawa World Music Festival, which is scheduled to be held in the summer of 2024.

My wife loves browsing and shopping in the medina, and she never leaves there empty handed. There’s always a beautiful piece of jewelry to be found, a piece of original artwork, hand-woven cotton blankets, and so much more. There are also lively restaurants, galleries, and wonderful spas that you can experience while there. Be sure to make your reservation in advance to enjoy a local hammam, and do as the locals do.
