Best Time to Visit Morocco

Morocco is a year-round destination, but "the best time" really depends on where in the country you're headed — a coastal town like Essaouira and a desert camp near Merzouga can feel like different climates entirely, even on the same day. Here's how the seasons actually break down.

Spring (March–May)

Widely considered the sweet spot. Daytime temperatures in Marrakech and Fes sit comfortably in the low-to-mid 20s°C (mid-70s°F), the countryside is green, and the High Atlas foothills are blooming. It's a great season for combining medina days with hikes, and the Sahara is warm without being extreme. This is also peak season, so book accommodations and guides in advance.

Summer (June–August)

Inland cities get genuinely hot — Marrakech, Fes, and especially the Sahara routinely see 38–45°C (100–113°F) in July and August. If you're set on a summer trip, lean toward the coast: Essaouira, Tangier, and Casablanca stay noticeably cooler thanks to the Atlantic breeze. A summer Sahara visit is still doable, just plan around the early morning and evening, and expect a hot, memorable night in the dunes.

Autumn (September–November)

Autumn mirrors spring — warm, clear days and cool evenings, with the added bonus of the desert cooling back down to a very comfortable range by October. Like spring, it's a popular window, so early planning helps.

Winter (December–February)

Coastal and lowland cities stay mild by European or North American winter standards — Marrakech often sees pleasant mid-teens to low-20s°C (60s–70s°F) by day. Two things to plan around: the High Atlas Mountains can get snow (beautiful, but relevant if your route crosses them), and Sahara desert nights get genuinely cold, close to freezing, even though the days are warm. A good desert camp and a warm layer make this a non-issue.

The Short Version

Spring and autumn offer the most balanced weather across the whole country, which is why they're the most popular. Summer favors the coast. Winter favors the cities and lowlands, with extra layers for desert nights. None of them are a bad time to visit — it's mostly about matching the season to your route.
