Marrakech vs. Fes

Marrakech and Fes are Morocco's two most visited imperial cities, and travelers with limited time often have to choose between them — or figure out how to fit both in. Here's how they actually differ.

Marrakech: Easier First Stop

Marrakech has the most developed tourist infrastructure in the country — more direct international flights, a wider range of riads and hotels, and a medina that, while still a maze, is more navigable than Fes's. It's also the natural jumping-off point for the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara, and Essaouira, which makes it a practical base if you're combining a city stay with a desert trip. If this is your first time in Morocco, Marrakech is the gentler introduction.

Fes: Deeper, More Traditional

Fes El Bali is the largest car-free urban area in the world and Morocco's oldest imperial capital — genuinely older and, in many ways, more traditional than Marrakech. The medina is bigger and more disorienting (locals half-joke that even they get lost), the tanneries and madrasas are more historically significant, and there are noticeably fewer other tourists in most of it. It rewards travelers who want a deeper, slower, more immersive experience and don't mind working a little harder for it.

Which Should You Pick First?

• Choose Marrakech first if it's your first trip to Morocco, you're combining the city with the Sahara or Essaouira, or you want more restaurant and hotel variety.
• Choose Fes first if you've been to Morocco before, you want the deepest possible medina experience, or your route naturally continues north to Chefchaouen and Tangier.

Or Just Do Both

Most travelers with 10+ days end up visiting both — Marrakech and Fes are roughly a comfortable day's drive apart (or a short domestic flight), and each is different enough that neither feels redundant after the other. A common route is Marrakech → Sahara → Fes → Chefchaouen, which uses the desert crossing as the link between the two cities instead of backtracking.
